The Power of Herbs and Spices

7 Herbs For Increasing Health

Even small doses of herbs and spices can provide powerful antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, cancer-fighting compounds, vitamins, minerals, and more. Here are seven that are easy to add to your diet.

Turmeric

Turmeric is an incredible inflammation fighter. It has a very powerful anti-inflammatory compound called curcumin. Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties slow down inflammation-related aging processes and diseases, such as leaky gut, digestive issues, and some autoimmune issues. Curcumin is also effective at increasing antioxidant capacity in the body. Curcumin can also increase immunity with its antibacterial and anti-viral properties. One of the simplest ways to increase its absorption by the body is by using turmeric alongside a dash of black pepper.

Ginger

Like turmeric, ginger is also anti-inflammatory. This is why it’s so soothing for an upset stomach, which can often be connected to inflammation in the body. Ginger can decrease markers of inflammation, such as C-reactive protein. Additionally, ginger can protect against stomach ulcers and treat menstrual cramps. It can also relieve nausea and diarrhea. Ginger tea is great for relieving flu symptoms as well.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is packed with antioxidants. Even just a little cinnamon, around 1 teaspoon per day, can give you a healthy boost. Antioxidants help slow the aging process, reduce oxidative stress, and rid the body of toxins. Cinnamon is great for managing blood sugar and insulin levels. Like turmeric and ginger, cinnamon is also anti-inflammatory. If you really want to reap the benefits, have all three together.

Sage

Sage can be used to boost brain function. It’s been known to increase memory recall and retention. Sage is relatively high in vitamin K, which supports blood clotting and blood calcium levels. It may also stabilize cholesterol levels, treat symptoms of menopause, and improve blood sugar. Lastly, like most herbs and spices, sage has anti-inflammatory properties and plenty of antioxidants.

Cilantro

Fresh cilantro (also called coriander) has a ton of beneficial fiber and is packed with vitamin A, C, E, K, calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium. Cilantro rids the body of heavy metals, protects against oxidative stress, lowers blood sugar levels, protects against cardiovascular disease, prevents urinary tract infections, settles digestive upset, and supports healthy menstrual function. Cilantro also soothes skin irritations.

Parsley

Parsley is considered a superfood because it is a concentrated source of vitamins and antioxidants. It is extremely high in vitamin K. Parsley also contains vitamin C, vitamin A, some folate (a B vitamin), and iron. It’s high in antioxidants, which can reduce free radical damage and oxidative stress markers. It’s even considered a chemo-protective plant due to its ability to fight damage to DNA. Parsley is both antibacterial and antifungal. Parsley oil is great for the skin because it can fight bacteria and clear blemishes.

Cayenne

Cayenne pepper is one of the best anti-inflammatory spices out there. Cayenne helps digestion, relieves migraine pain, prevents blood clots, provides detox support, relieves joint and nerve pain, supports weight loss, calms stomach irritation, boosts metabolism, and fights cold and flu.
